Modern Foreign Languages

Bienvenue à Twickenham école primaire!

The learning of a modern foreign language in primary school is a valuable educational experience for students, developing communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.

At Twickenham Primary School we endeavour to develop a love of languages through the teaching of a modern foreign language (MFL) in a fun and enjoyable way. We aim to provide children with an understanding of a different European culture, developing positive attitudes to other languages and cultures as well as the skills and confidence to communicate effectively in another language. MFL is taught to all key stage 2 children, Spanish in years 3 and 4 and French in years 5 and 6.  Children are taught by their own class teacher using a variety of teaching methods to enhance language learning, such as; role play, songs, computer programmes and a variety of practical games and activities. Where possible French and Spanish topics are linked with the year group plans in order to make the language learning meaningful. It also provides children with an opportunity to apply their French or Spanish vocabulary within other areas of the curriculum.  Class teachers also provide regular opportunities for children to integrate their French or Spanish into their daily routine.

We will be providing links to useful websites so that you can support your children with language learning at home.
