School Council

Why do we have a School Council?

The School Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. The School Council benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers, because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made. Councillors develop skills such as confidence, communication and negotiation. It is the responsibility of each Councillor to ensure that they express both their own views and the views of all the other pupils they represent.

Who can be a member of the School Council?

We have an active School Council with a boy and girl from every class representing their fellow pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. Each councillor is elected by their classmates at the beginning of the school year after a short presentation explaining why they should be elected.

What do we do?

Members of the Council take part in discussions and votes and also feed back any relevant information to their class. At times they are requested to ask their class for ideas or take class votes relating to discussions by the Council. Members meet regularly with members of the Senior Leadership team.

School Council meeting 23/09/16

At the meeting were Mr Drummond, Mrs Mortiboy, Mr Slack and School Council.

Mr Drummond welcomed everyone and reminded everyone that our new Chairman is Hayden Brandt and our Vice Chairman is Jayaun Brown.

Mr Drummond then reminded School Council that the first of our charity days was on Friday 26th September which was the Macmillan coffee morning. School Council members said that they would make sure that everyone in their class knew about it and that they would tell the pupils to remind their parents about it. Mr Drummond then asked School Council if they had any suggestions or ideas from their classmates. This is what they said:

  1. "Can we have a quiet area in the 3 & 4 playground so we can read or just relax at break times?" - Mr Slack said that it was a great idea and that he would investigate it once the roof works were complete in that area of the school.
  2. "Can we have an area in the 5 & 6 playground that could be used for gymnastics at dinner time?" - Mr Drummond said that he would look into this and see if a soft flooring area could be installed.
  3. "Can we have a basketball team as well as a netball team?" - Mr Drummond said he would speak to the teachers about this and let School Council know.
  4. "Can we have a girls football team as well as a boys football team?" - Mrs Mortiboy said that there was a girls team already and that the girls did play football with the boys at the after school club.

Mr Slack then took the new photo of the School Council which he said would be put up on the School Council notice board.
